Red Wrinkle Coat Paint Flaking Off
2010 Ferrari 458
Engine Issue
Miles: 42,000 Date of First Occurrence (D/M/Y): 15/07/2020 DTC Codes (if any): Parts List: Approximate Cost to Fix: $1,000Description of Issue:
The red wrinkle / crinkle coat paint covering the intake manifold and valve covers began to flake off. It became very fragile / brittle and just touching it would cause it to crack or break apart. This appears to be common across almost all Ferrari models with this paint on engine parts.
Resolution if Known:
There are some who have tried to touch up the paint in spots which may work, but I've found the best solution is to remove the parts, and have them professionally powder coated. Talking with the pros, they said they believe the problem is the Ferrari factory uses a regular paint which is not suitable for the high temperatures experienced in the engine bay. Powder coating should resolve this problem permanently. It's far more durable.
