Part 11 of the Ferrari 348 DIY Major Engine Out Service. The Ferrari 348 requires the engine to be pulled every 3-5 years or 25,000 miles to replace the timing belts. Usually this also entails replacing many other components such as the tensioners, water pump, bearings, and pulleys. Typically this service starts at around $10,000 at most reputable shops, and can easily cost upwards of $25,000. We are going full bore and replacing almost everything that can wear so the engine will be almost as good as new and give Tim many years of use.
Unfortunately, we accidentally broke the engine. After well over 7 hours of trying to dial in the timing perfectly, we were pretty exhausted and made a simple mistake. The intake cam was off by about 8-10 degrees advanced, and instead of retarding it 8-10 degrees, we advanced it a further 8-10ish degrees putting the cam at over 20 degrees of advance!!! That is WAY too far, and the valves end up smashing into the pistons.
Although we could not identify any physical damage to the valves, there were clearly “kiss” marks on the pistons confirming that the valves had indeed touched the pistons. Out of an extreme abundance of caution, we decided it was best to simply replace the valves and not risk any future valve failure. This was an expensive mistake and shows why you need to be on your A game when doing timing.
